The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) is a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge sharing centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. In partnership with regional and international organizations, ICIMOD aims to influence policy and practices to meet environmental and livelihood challenges emerging in the HKH. ICIMOD serves as a platform for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from the region and around the globe to generate and share knowledge, support evidence-based decision making, and encourage regional cooperation. ICIMOD seeks to reduce poverty and vulnerability and improve the lives and livelihoods of mountain communities, now and in the future. ICIMOD delivers impact through its six Regional Programmes: 1) Adaptation and Resilience Building, 2) Transboundary Landscapes, 3) River Basins and Cryosphere, 4) Atmosphere, 5) Mountain Environment Regional Information System, and 6) Mountain Knowledge and Action Networks. These regional programmes are supported by four Thematic Areas: Livelihoods, Ecosystem Services, Water and Air, and Geospatial Solutions, and by the Knowledge Management and Communication (KMC) unit.

The Livelihoods Thematic Area focuses on promoting diversified and sustainable livelihood options in the HKH region and strengthening the social side of ICIMOD’s work. The Livelihood theme is undertaking a special project to develop a gender atlas using gender data and geographic information systems (GIS). ICIMOD implements various gender programmes, which generate data on gender issues, and geographic information systems can be used to store, manage and interpret multi-dimensional spatial data sets. A Gender Associate will collect, analyse, and present gender-related data in the HKH region using GIS tools.

Responsibilities and tasks

The Gender Associate will work for the Gender Atlas special project under the supervision of the Senior Gender Specialist – Gender Lead.

The Associate will:

• Collect, review, tabulate, and consolidate various gender data from the HKH
• Analyse and propose possible ways to present the data and present it using infographics, etc.
• Collaborate with the Mountain Environment and Natural Resources Information System (MENRIS) team to present data using GIS maps and to set up the atlas online
• Prepare infographics and other presentation forms

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s in social or natural sciences and work experience in gender, natural resources, and social issues
• A minimum of 2 years of experience working on gender data and gender issues
• Experience in and knowledge of mountain development and gender issues, preferably in the Hindu Kush Himalaya
• Experience and knowledge of GIS-related applications is preferred

Duty Station

ICIMOD headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal


The project contract is for one year, beginning with a probation period of 3 months and with a possibility of yearly extension, for up to 2 years, subject to performance and ICIMOD’s future funding levels.

Starting Date: 1 August 2018


ICIMOD’s salaries and benefits are competitive with those at other regional organizations; remuneration is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
